2017: A Retrospective

I’ve just looked at the site and I’ve posted exactly one blog this year which I’ll admit isn’t exactly record breaking. I’ve been busy outside of my hobbies with work, moving house and life in general throwing some unexpected swerve balls that diminished any insensitive I’ve had to write. Hopefully, 2018 will be better and I’ll get my writing mojo back.

Although I haven’t blogged in any meaningful way this year I have managed to paint a few models up which I thought I’d share some examples of in this post.

The start of the year was taken up with painting the Silvertower models.

After painting up my Silvertower models I delved into the universe of 40k and paint up some Ultramarines. I’d picked up some Primaris Marines on eBay for a couple of pounds and thought I’d paint them up as smurfs as all the GW box art features them and I’ve never painted any.

Next on the list was to finish off a Carmine Dragon that I’ve had knocking around for a few years. There wasn’t a lot to do on this except for the horn work and the base.

At this point in the year I picked up two Dark Imperium and a Know No Fear box sets which has meant that for the latter part of the year I’ve been alternating between painting the Astartes up as Imperial Fist and painting the Death Guard.

My plans for 2018 are to keep working away on the Imperial Fists and Death Guard and resist the urge to deviate into other armies. Hopefully, this will happen and I’ll also be able to write more than one blog in 2018!

Paving the Silvertower

I’ve had Silvertower and the two hero packs knocking around since Christmas so the other week I thought I’d crack on with it and start building some of the models. In order to try and keep things as simple as possible I decided to pick up the appropriate sets of the GW Shattered dominion bases.

Now when it comes to bases I’ve been known to be a bit of a fool as I’ve made them either too complicated, to the point where I lose interest, or I’ve bought resin ones that cost a fortune, these GW bases I hopped would fit somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

For £20 you get alot of bases 30x32mm and 40x25mm in one box and in the other 6x65mm and 20x40mm so for £40 I have more than enough bases. The bases themselves come on a spruce so if you want to batch paint them quickly you can paint them on the spruce. My only complaint is that GW haven’t produced a 50mm shattered dominion base which means that for some of your slightly larger models you’ll be trying to make your own.

After looking at the Silvertower board for a while I decided that I’d use the box art base colours on the 25mm shattered dominon box art.  I went with this for three reasons; the first was that I liked the colours and thought it would match up with the board; the seconds was that I wouldn’t have to think of what colours to use as GW have done that for me; and thirdly I didn’t want to spend tooling painting the bases but I wanted them to look good.

Now the box art gives you the basic paint list you need but it doesn’t give you all of the paints you’ll need to try and replicate the full base look. For this you’ll need a copy of White Dwarf  #130 which came out on the 23rd July 2016. Now I had to get this off ebay as I pretty much abandoned the Dwarf down a mine shaft when it went weekly, but to save you the fuss of finding it here are the colours.

Like all the GW guides it’s very clear and you achieve a decent looking result very quickly and with little effort. I’m happy with how it looks and I think a whole host of models based this way will look fab.

2017: The Year Ahead

For the last few months my hobby stuff has been and still is packed up as I’ve been moving house. If truth be told I’ve been in the process of moving for around 12 months now but the first house fell through. Anyway, we’re all in now and the vast majority of the boxes have been unpacked. In this house I should have an area that can be a dedicated hobby space, I’m really looking forward to this as I’ve never had that luxury before.

As I haven’t had chance to crack on with some hobby for a few months I throught I’d write a to-do list of everything – hobby related – that I want to achieve in 2017.

So here we go…

1. Set up a hobby space. This will involve finding a suitable desk that will also have space for tools and paints. I also want to get some integrated lighting into the area.

2. Finish off my Carmine Dragon. It’s been knocking around for months now and it just needs the flesh and bone areas painting. I also need to find a suitable base for it.

3. Complete my Sylvaneth models. This involves painting three hunters, two tree lords and a Sylvaneth Wizard that I knocked up.

4. Build and paint up the Silvertower models along with extra hero packs.

5. Build and paint up my Emperor’s Children Tactical Marines.

6. Build and paint The Everqueen.

7. Try and not buy anymore models until I’ve painted everything.

With the speed that I paint I think that there will be more than enough for me to do here but if I manage to get all this painted I wouldn’t mind picking up some Death Korps of Krieg and building up a little force of them. So that’s my 2017 plan, it’s a little late but a late plan is better than no plan!
